Slow Start from Carterton but thoroughly deserved winners.
Carterton started very slow and conceded an early corner. They were caught ball watching as three unmarked Wantage players ran into the box and scored the opening goal. Carterton immediately woke up and talisman Dylan Butler pressed the Wantage back four, won the ball and blasted into the Wantage net after 9 mins to equalise. Wantage held their nerve despite conceding possession for long periods of the game, however in the 30th minute Carterton finally took the lead from a corner kick driven in by George Wright for Jay Revill to head into the Wantage net and take the lead. Minutes later another cross from George Wright saw Byron Townsend arrive at the back post to make it 3-1. Carterton were dominating the midfield and at 38mins their best goal of the game came from seven successive passes which ended in Byron Townsend blasting a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar into the net. A few minutes before half time saw another perfect corner delivery from Man of the Match George Wright onto the head of unmarked Connor Butler to make it 5-1.
Carterton came out fast in the second half with striker Marcus Owsnett scoring a tap in on the 46th minute. Wantage played on bravely and steadied themselves in defence with chances going missing from the Carterton front men. In the 71st minute another classic striker’s goal came from the quick-witted Marcus Owsnett picking up a loose ball from George Wright’s initial shot for him to again tap into the net. In the 82nd min George Wright on the left wing skipped past 3 Wantage defenders to cross for Jay Haydon to score his first goal in the match. Another goal in the 86th min Jay Haydon completed his second goal in the match with a bullet shot from 20 yards out. Another goal in the 87th min from Dylan Butler and finally another by him in the last seconds of the game made sure of his third hat trick this season. Carterton win 11-1 and go into a winter break, top of the league.
